An Interview with Di

Where were you born?

My brother and I were the first set of twins born at the Mary Font Hospital in Pretoria, South Africa.

What is your educational background?

I have a medical background.

What first got you interested in craft?

My mother had her own studio, so I grew up with all crafts and they have always been a part of my life.

How long have you been crafting?

I have been doing silk ribbon embroidery for more than 20 years.

Where do you get your materials?

I make my own ribbons and the cloth is milled for me, to my specifications.

How/Where did Search Press discover you?

Through Metz Press

What were your first thoughts when asked to write a book?

I was excited. I love the challenge of the blank canvas that is a new book. I relish finding and inventing techniques that have either not been done before or have been lost in the sands of time.

Has publishing a book changed your life in any way?

It has, in the most positive way. It has brought the world to me and taken me to the world.

Any tips for beginners?

All that a beginner needs is enthusiasm. After that just follow your heart.

What is your favourite craft tool?

Good quality, pointed, sharp scissors, followed very quickly by Piecemakers' Needles.

Have you travelled for your craft?

Yes, to England, Australia and all over South Africa. I have been invited to many other places that I look forward to visiting one day, time permitting.

Where does your inspiration come from?

Hiking via Kirstenbosch Gardens and up Table Mountain in Cape Town where there is abundant nature and colour.
